Is your club aware and ready for a random inspection?
The UK government announced a four week delay to the lockdown lift, dubbed “Freedom Day” which was expected to take place on June 21st. Arguing that it will reduce the risk of another major outbreak of the virus and potential fourth lockdown, the delay has affected the schedules of many social clubs and sports businesses. With various government loans, funds and support ending, many businesses have been abruptly left in a difficult situation.
Whereas what will continue is the ongoing HSE inspections in line with government guidance. The Health and Safety Executive have been undertaking spot-checks which assess the COVID-secure measures taken by businesses. These remain unchanged and include:
- Social distancing
- Adequate ventilation
- Frequent cleaning
- Good hand hygiene
Work places must carry out a COVID risk assessment and keep it regularly updated. Why is there spot checks?
The spot checks are designed to help stop variants of COVID-19 spreading. The HSE will target areas where transmission rates are rising, but will also randomly spot check around England, Scotland and Wales.
Officers from the HSE or affiliate partners will be carrying identification and a letter of authorisation from the HSE. The visit usually succeeds a call from the organisation. They will check proportionate steps should have been undertaken, however if the COVID measure are not up to standard, they will issue guidance or, in some cases, take action. This may include forced closure, enforcement notices or prosecution where a business fails to comply.
