Congratulations for Holbeck Working Men’s Club

It was an exciting week last week for one of our clients. In our home city, Holbeck Working Men’s Club celebrated the unveiling of their new Blue Plaque!

The plaque commemorates the club, which is the oldest in the UK continually operating from the same site! Opened in 1878 in South Leeds in its own purpose built venue, locals have been enjoying its atmosphere for over 140 years.

At a special ceremony last week, Hilary Benn MP, the Lord Mayor of Leeds and a host of the club members unveiled the plaque alongside poetry readings and a Commoners Choir performance.

The club holds a dear place in local’s hearts, with 6 people rolling up their sleeves and saving the club at one time when it reached hard times. It even has a claim to fame! Morecambe & Wise once auditioned to perform here before they hit the big time. But the committee at the time didn’t think they were funny, so they didn’t make the cut!

This is a great recognition of Holbeck’s and other Working Men’s Clubs importance in the UK’s industrial past, and we’re proud to work alongside them to make sure they’re protected now, and for the future. So congratulations to all involved!
